The London Borough of Southwark in South London forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London.
This area owes its name to the time when, at the southern end of London Bridge, it was literally the only borough outside the City of London itself.
Borough High Street is the area's spine. To the west lie Borough Market and Southwark Cathedral, dealt with on separate pages. To the east, Guy's Hospital and London Bridge station dominate the area.
Right at the end of London Bridge is the Southwark Needle.
The George Inn in Borough High Street is London's only remaining galleried inn. Now owned by the National Trust, just one of the original three sides of the yard is intact. The yard is sometimes used for musical and theatrical performances.
Just to the south of the George is Talbot Yard, which once housed the Tabard Inn, a popular starting point for pilgrims to St Thomas Becket in Canterbury and featured by Chaucer in his Canterbury Tales.
Eating and drinking opportunities in Borough High Street include Belushi's, the Slug & Lettuce, Our Cellar wine bar and others. Tas has opened an offshoot of its hugely successful Waterloo restaurant.
John Harvard Library is a well-stocked lending library and source of information. Tucked away in the passageway behind is the Southwark Local History Library, essential for anyone interested in the history of this remarkable borough.
The church of St George-the-Martyr is famous for its connections with Dickens' Little Dorrit. The Catholic Church of Our Lady of Salette is nearby in Melior Street.
